Thank God It’s Today!

“I guess the real fact of the matter is, we don’t know what tomorrow is going to bring and the only thing we really have is right now. So, don’t stay angry for too long and learn to forgive. Love your friends and family with all your heart. Have fun and live your life the way you want to live it. Most of all, don’t worry about people that don’t like you and enjoy the ones who do.” ~ Unknown

I came across this beautiful quote recently, and it really got me thinking: While it’s a terrific quote about life in general, it also has a lot of relevance to business and careers. It breaks my heart that many entrepreneurs and professionals are living solely for the weekend; they count the hours and the minutes until the whistle sounds on Friday at 5:00, so they can finally escape from their work lives and be their authentic selves.

“Thank God It’s Friday” has become the rallying cry for the collective workforce. It is such a powerful sentiment and resonates so strongly for so many. How sad that such a large portion of people spend five-sevenths of their time focusing on the remaining two-sevenths!

Life is short, and like the quote says, “…we don’t know what tomorrow is going to bring and the only thing we really have is right now.” We can’t afford to wish away five-sevenths of our lives. It’s up to every one of us to life to the fullest, love to the fullest … right now.

As we enter a new year and a new decade, I challenge you, my readers, to take a close look at your lives, careers and businesses, and ask yourselves: “Do I love what I do? Am I passionate about my job or my company? Am I making a meaningful difference in the lives of others?”

If the answer is yes to these questions, then you are on the right path. But… if the answer is no, perhaps it’s time to examine what is working and what is not working for you. Perhaps it’s time to reboot your career and focus on what excites you. Maybe you need to re-establish your priorities and make some tough decisions so that you can create the work and the life that you truly deserve.

Imagine going to sleep Sunday night, tossing and turning in bed, because you simply cannot wait until the alarm goes off in the morning. Imagine living with the passion and excitement of knowing that you get to go to work another day. Imagine having a job or a business that makes our world a better place. Just imagine it.

And then make a plan. How can you move from an uninspired, unfulfilling career to one that is filled with inspiration and innovation? 2020 is the year you finally build the life you love. 2020 is the year you get to live your authentic life. 2020 is the year you get to replace “Thank God it’s Friday” with “Thank God it’s today!
